What is the BreckConnect Gondola?

The BreckConnect Gondola is a free, scenic lift that connects downtown Breckenridge to the base of Peak 7 and Peak 8 at the Breckenridge Ski Resort. This is ideal for anyone who wants to participate in activities on the mountain. While you ride it, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Tenmile Range, Breckenridge below, the Cucumber Gulch Wildlife Preserve, and the surrounding forests. The view is worth it just by itself!

History

The BreckConnect Gondola opened its doors in 2006, and it was a game-changer for guests, the Breckenridge Ski Resort, and the town! Before it was built, visitors had to rely on shuttle buses to reach the base areas of Peaks 7 and 8. The BreckConnect Gondola has made getting around so much easier – and more enjoyable – for everyone.

Fun Facts

The Breckenridge gondola ascends approximately 400 feet vertically and spans 7,600 feet in length. It can transport up to 3,000 guests per hour within its 121 cabins. It’s no surprise that when it was built, it was considered one of the most modern gondolas in North America!

How Much Does It Cost?

It’s free! This is one of the best things about the BreckConnect Gondola. All you need to do is head to the gondola station and climb on board.

Where is the BreckConnect Gondola Located?

The BreckConnect Gondola base station is conveniently located on Watson Avenue in downtown Breckenridge, just a short walk from Main Street. This central location makes it easy to access if you’re shopping, dining, or exploring downtown!

Address: 170 Watson Ave., Breckenridge, CO 80424

BreckConnect Gondola

When Does It Run?

The BreckConnect Gondola operates seasonally, with different schedules for summer and winter.

Summer

From June until Labor Day, the gondola runs daily. This schedule is perfect for those looking to enjoy hiking trails, alpine slides, and other summer activities at the Breckenridge Ski Resort.

  • Hours: 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM

Winter

Once the Breckenridge Ski Resort opens in November, the gondola resumes operation for skiers, snowboarders, and winter adventurers.

  • Hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Closures

The BreckConnect Gondola closes during the spring in order to protect the wildlife that migrates through the gulch during that time. This is just another wonderful way that Breckenridge supports sustainability and conservation. It also closes for maintenance in the fall before the Breckenridge Ski Resort opens for the season.

Where Do I Park?

If you’re wondering where to park, there are several great options available.

Free Parking

There is free parking at the:

  • Ice Rink Parking Lot: 189 Boreas Pass Rd, Breckenridge, CO 80424
  • McCain Drive Parking Lot: Located off McCain Drive and Coyne Valley Road.

Paid Parking

There is paid parking at the:

  • South Gondola Parking Structure: 80 North Park Avenue, Breckenridge, CO 80424
  • North Gondola Lot: Located on French Street between North Park Avenue and North Main Street.
  • Gold Rush Lot: Located at the intersection of North Park Avenue and Woods Drive.

BreckConnect Gondola

Is There a Free Shuttle to the Gondola?

There’s a free shuttle service that has routes all over Breckenridge, taking you to the gondola. It’s called Breck Free Ride.

How Long Does the Gondola Ride Take?

The gondola ride takes about 10 minutes from the base in downtown Breckenridge to the top at Peak 8.

Where Does the Gondola Stop?

Along the way, you’ll make a few stops!

  • Downtown Breckenridge: This is where the gondola route begins and ends, just walking distance from everything downtown Breckenridge has to offer.

People from all over flock to Breckenridge for the fantastic skiing, snowboarding, vibrant culture, and outdoor activities. However, it is more than just a ski town. Breckenridge has a rich heritage that spans from the indigenous tribes who inhabited the land for millennia to the miners who arrived in search of fortune, to the Rounds family, who played a significant role in shaping the town as we know it today. As you walk through its timeline, you will see there is much to discover about the history of this community.

The Ute People

Mountains in Breckenridge, CO

To start our historical journey, we meet the indigenous Ute people, who lived on the land for thousands of years. They were a nomadic Tribe who traveled through the Rocky Mountains, hunting and gathering. During the summer, they would stay right here in the Blue River Valley, set up camp, raise their children, and live harmoniously with nature. To this day, folks in Breckenridge find remnants of old campsites during excavations and explorations! We take this moment to honor the legacy of the Ute Tribe who lived here for so long.

Boom Town

In 1859, during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, prospectors from the east started to settle the area. They named the town Breckinridge, (although the spelling would change a few years later to Breckenridge).  Of course, folks came here to strike it rich, and some of them did. One year, a miner found a gold nugget that weighed 13 pounds! This piece of gold is lovingly known as Tom’s Baby, and there’s even a statue in honor of this moment at Prospector Park on Main Street, downtown.

By the 1860s, Breckenridge was buzzing with activity. It had its own post office, saloons, and various supply stores for the community. As the days of gold panning transitioned to more industrialized mining methods, Breckenridge transformed into a place for entrepreneurs chasing their dreams, and this growth continued into the 1900s.

The Rounds Family Arrive

View of Breckenridge Ski Resort

During World War II, Breckenridge began to decline and fade. The population dwindled, and many buildings began to fall into disrepair. Just as the town sank into obscurity, a group of visionaries led by the Rounds family arrived and changed the course of Breckenridge’s future.

In the late 1950s, Ralph Rounds purchased 5,000 acres of land in and around town. His son, Bill Rounds, was an avid skier whose big dreams would lay the groundwork for the Breckenridge we now know and love.

Bill was great friends with Norwegian ski instructors Sigurd Rockne and Trygve Berge. Whenever they visited Breckenridge, they would point out what a great place it would be for skiing. This inspired Bill. One day during apres-ski with his Scandinavian friends, he decided that they would all build a ski resort.

Before anything could be built, a lumber yard was needed to supply the lumber required for construction. So, Bill started to build what was then called the Antrim Lumber Company. Today, you’ll recognize it as the Breckenridge Building Center. As a fun piece of trivia, while the lumber yard was going up, the crew slept on the floor of the Colorado House. That building still exists today, now serving up slices as Fatty’s Pizzeria, one of Breckenridge’s many great restaurants.

With the lumber yard in place, building the ski resort came next.

A New Era Emerges

On December 16, 1961, Breckenridge Ski Resort officially opened with one double chairlift and a base area on Peak 8. Lift tickets cost just $4 back then! The resort offered a handful of trails, but it was the beginning of a new era. The Rounds family’s investment and vision had paid off, and it began turning Breckenridge into a winter sports destination.

The resort soon attracted visitors, businesses, and eventually, major investors. Over the decades, Breckenridge Ski Resort expanded to include Peaks 6 through 10, over 2,908 acres of skiable terrain, 187 trails, 35 lifts, and a reputation for world-class skiing. Today, more than 1.5 million skiers come through Breckenridge each year!

In 2006, the BreckConnect Gondola debuted, highlighting another enormous change for Breckenridge. The Gondola completely redefined how visitors could move around the mountain, making it much more accessible. The Gondola begins downtown and travels nearly 7,600 feet up the mountain, ending at Peak 8. It’s a scenic and convenient experience!

The Rounds’ Family Legacy

The Rounds family didn’t just create a ski resort; they played a pivotal role in shaping the heart and soul of Breckenridge. With their vision and entrepreneurial spirit, they transformed a former mining town into a lively, year-round mountain community.

Now, whether you come to town for the winter sports or everything else it has to offer, you can thank the Rounds family for helping create the Breckenridge of today that we all know and love.

Breckenridge is Now a Certified Dark Sky Community

Stargazers and photographers rejoice! Not only is Breckenridge, Colorado, a go-to spot for skiing and mountain activities, but it’s also a destination for those who want to enjoy an unspoiled night sky. Breckenridge is now a Certified Dark Sky Community, a title bestowed upon it by DarkSky International. This means it has taken measures to protect the night sky from light pollution, and to stunning effect. Less ambient light lets you see the moon, planets, stars, and other celestial objects with great luminosity, and as a result, Breckenridge has become a haven for those who want a peek at the Milky Way. And when you stay at an Alpine Edge vacation rental, you have a stargazing home base! It doesn’t get much more convenient than that. So, let’s explore why being a Dark Sky Community is important and what it means for your vacation to Breckenridge.

What is a Dark Sky Certified Community?

A Certified Dark Sky Community, such as Breckenridge, is a city or town dedicated to preserving natural darkness. These places achieve this by installing outdoor lighting that doesn’t affect the night sky (and adheres to Dark Sky International’s regulations). As light pollution lessens, the visual results are pure magic.

Are Dark Sky Communities Worth the Visit?

Milky Way above Mountains

Yes! In most cities, light pollution hides almost all the stars. In a Dark Sky Community like Breckenridge, you can see thousands of stars, the Milky Way, meteor showers, and much more with immense clarity. So bundle up, bring a blanket, grab some hot cocoa or tea, and head out to see the stars! Pro Tip: Don’t forget to bring your camera and tripod to get some shots of the night sky.

Why is a Dark Sky Important?

Dark skies are more important than you might realize. While light pollution can make it tough to see the stars, it affects so much more than our view of the night sky. It can be harmful to wildlife, too! Many nocturnal animals and insects depend on natural light and darkness cycles for things like hunting, migrating, and pollinating. When artificial light disrupts their natural habits, it can sometimes have pretty serious consequences. By becoming a Dark Sky Community, Breckenridge has taken a big step in creating a friendlier environment for the amazing wildlife and ecosystems that call this place home!

Breckenridge’s Path to Becoming a Dark Sky Community

The journey to becoming a Dark Sky Community began in 2007 when the town started implementing the use of fully shielded Dark Sky compliant light fixtures for public and residential properties. These clever fixtures help keep night skies dark by directing light downwards, instead of allowing it to shine up or sideways. The community really came together to implement this simple step, and it has done wonders to help keep light pollution down. Thanks to these measures, Breckenridge is now the first resort town in Colorado to be listed as a Dark Sky Community!

The Happy Cuisiniere

The Happy Cuisiniere is run by Jenny Levasseur and her friendly team of chefs. Jenny began her career as a pastry chef and went on to work in numerous restaurants. From Asian contemporary-inspired kitchens to Rocky Mountain style cuisine, she’s cooked it all!

Not only do Jenny and her crew bring years of expertise, but they will be happy to chat with you as they cook! Feel free to ask them about what’s on the menu; they’ll even give you the recipe (except, that is, for the top-secret lava cake).

Cost: Between $108 – $125 per person

How it Works

  • Give Jenny your headcount. She can cook for 1 person or for 40! Just let her know, and she will create a tasty game plan.
  • Discuss which menu items you would like! She’s happy to work with different food preferences, such as gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, and dairy-free.
  • The chef arrives and cooks everything from scratch. If there is a large party, a sous chef may accompany! This includes sauces, salad dressings, flatbreads, and more—all cooked right in front of you!
  • Once everything is cooked and served, they will load your dishwasher and head out.

Chefs at Your Breck and Call

After a thrilling day on the slopes, it is time to enjoy some après-ski, Breckenridge style. In this blog post, we explore twelve of our favorite ways to indulge in après-ski. Take some notes so you can start building the perfect itinerary for wintertime fun. From off-slope snow activities to relaxing in the hot tub, we have plenty of ways for you to rest, relax, indulge, and continue the good times.

Whether it’s a cozy fireplace in your luxury vacation rental or a fire pit at a local pub, there are a plethora of opportunities to warm your hands and your spirit.
