Breckenridge Information, Things to Do

Breckenridge is Now a Certified Dark Sky Community

Stargazers and photographers rejoice! Not only is Breckenridge, Colorado, a go-to spot for skiing and mountain activities, but it’s also a destination for those who want to enjoy an unspoiled night sky. Breckenridge is now a Certified Dark Sky Community, a title bestowed upon it by DarkSky International. This means it has taken measures to protect the night sky from light pollution, and to stunning effect. Less ambient light lets you see the moon, planets, stars, and other celestial objects with great luminosity, and as a result, Breckenridge has become a haven for those who want a peek at the Milky Way. And when you stay at an Alpine Edge vacation rental, you have a stargazing home base! It doesn’t get much more convenient than that. So, let’s explore why being a Dark Sky Community is important and what it means for your vacation to Breckenridge.

What is a Dark Sky Certified Community?

A Certified Dark Sky Community, such as Breckenridge, is a city or town dedicated to preserving natural darkness. These places achieve this by installing outdoor lighting that doesn’t affect the night sky (and adheres to Dark Sky International’s regulations). As light pollution lessens, the visual results are pure magic.

Are Dark Sky Communities Worth the Visit?

Milky Way above Mountains

Yes! In most cities, light pollution hides almost all the stars. In a Dark Sky Community like Breckenridge, you can see thousands of stars, the Milky Way, meteor showers, and much more with immense clarity. So bundle up, bring a blanket, grab some hot cocoa or tea, and head out to see the stars! Pro Tip: Don’t forget to bring your camera and tripod to get some shots of the night sky.

Why is a Dark Sky Important?

Dark skies are more important than you might realize. While light pollution can make it tough to see the stars, it affects so much more than our view of the night sky. It can be harmful to wildlife, too! Many nocturnal animals and insects depend on natural light and darkness cycles for things like hunting, migrating, and pollinating. When artificial light disrupts their natural habits, it can sometimes have pretty serious consequences. By becoming a Dark Sky Community, Breckenridge has taken a big step in creating a friendlier environment for the amazing wildlife and ecosystems that call this place home!

Breckenridge’s Path to Becoming a Dark Sky Community

The journey to becoming a Dark Sky Community began in 2007 when the town started implementing the use of fully shielded Dark Sky compliant light fixtures for public and residential properties. These clever fixtures help keep night skies dark by directing light downwards, instead of allowing it to shine up or sideways. The community really came together to implement this simple step, and it has done wonders to help keep light pollution down. Thanks to these measures, Breckenridge is now the first resort town in Colorado to be listed as a Dark Sky Community!

Meet the Chefs

Private chef sauteeing

Here at Alpine Edge, we are proud to work with two local companies that offer private chef services: The Happy Cuisiniere and Chefs at Your Breck and Call

The Happy Cuisiniere

The Happy Cuisiniere is run by Jenny Levasseur and her friendly team of chefs. Jenny began her career as a pastry chef and went on to work in numerous restaurants. From Asian contemporary-inspired kitchens to Rocky Mountain style cuisine, she’s cooked it all!

Not only do Jenny and her crew bring years of expertise, but they will be happy to chat with you as they cook! Feel free to ask them about what’s on the menu; they’ll even give you the recipe (except, that is, for the top-secret lava cake).

Cost: Between $108 – $125 per person

How it Works

  • Give Jenny your headcount. She can cook for 1 person or for 40! Just let her know, and she will create a tasty game plan.
  • Discuss which menu items you would like! She’s happy to work with different food preferences, such as gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, and dairy-free.
  • The chef arrives and cooks everything from scratch. If there is a large party, a sous chef may accompany! This includes sauces, salad dressings, flatbreads, and more—all cooked right in front of you!
  • Once everything is cooked and served, they will load your dishwasher and head out.

Chefs at Your Breck and Call

Chef baking

Chefs at Your Breck and Call is a premier service operated by six local chefs who have joined forces to deliver exceptional culinary experiences. Collectively, they bring decades of experience from various restaurants (including some with Michelin stars).

Cost: A four-course meal starts at $115 per person, plus a 20% gratuity fee.

How it Works

  • Choose your menu or discuss with the chef what you want. If you’ve seen recipes elsewhere that you’re interested in, let them know! They will do their best to accommodate.
  • Alert them to any food preferences, allergies, or the need for vegetarian options.
  • They will suggest the number of appetizers and entrées needed for your group’s size.
  • The chefs arrive and cook for you, so you can mingle with your loved ones, relax, and enjoy the meal. Bon appétit!

Your Guide to Public Transportation in Breckenridge

Breckenridge is a fantastic vacation destination any time of year. With its stunning mountaintop views, world-class skiing areas, and summer activities like horseback riding and hiking, you’ll be busy during your trip. Visiting any new place can be overwhelming, though—you have to learn a new town and figure out how to get around quickly. If you’re wondering about public transportation in Breckenridge, you’re in luck!

We’ve put together a guide to help first-time visitors get around Breckenridge with ease. Here’s our comprehensive guide to public transportation in Breckenridge!

Do I Need A Car in Breckenridge?

Honestly, you don’t need a car to get around Breckenridge. Free, easy-to-use public transportation eliminates the need for one. Plus, there are airport shuttles to take you to and from the Denver or Vail airport.

Of course, if you want to rent a car during your trip, you certainly can. Some guests prefer to run on their own time instead of waiting on bus schedules, and that’s understandable! If you want to splurge on a rental car, find one at  Denver International Airport (they have a variety of vendors and services), or use Turo to find the most affordable options.

If you do decide to rent a car, choose one with all-wheel or four-wheel drive. It is illegal to drive a 2-wheel-drive car in the snow here in Colorado, and you don’t want to be caught with the wrong vehicle in inclement weather! Snow plows will come through to clear 4+ inches of snow, but you should be prepared to drive in anything less than that.

Is There Public Transportation in Breckenridge?

The short answer is yes. Breckenridge has several transportation services designed to make navigating the town easy and accessible!

Breckenridge Public Transportation

Breckenridge Free Ride

Breckenridge offers a free public bus system known as the Free Ride so that you can navigate the town without a hitch! This year-round service provides convenient access to key destinations, including Main Street, ski resorts, shopping centers, and residential areas—including our vacation rentals!

Key Features of the Free Ride:

  • Completely Free: No fare is required for any route.
  • Regular Routes: Buses run frequently throughout the day, with increased service during peak ski season.
  • Covers Major Areas: Connects downtown Breckenridge, lodging areas, ski lifts, and commercial zones.
  • Real-Time Tracking: Visitors can track buses via the My Free Ride app or the town’s website.

Popular Free Ride Routes:

  • Blue Route: Serves the Four O’Clock, Snowflake, and Beaver Run areas.
  • Purple Route: Connects Airport Road to Breckenridge Station and Main Street.
  • Black Route: Provides access to Breckenridge’s ski resort base areas.
  • Gray Route: Great for those staying in residential neighborhoods.

With buses running approximately every 15–30 minutes, the Free Ride is one of the easiest ways to move around town.

Summit Stage

Summit Stage is another free bus service that connects Breckenridge with neighboring towns like Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon, and Keystone.

Why Use Summit Stage?

  • Connects to Other Resorts: You can visit other ski resorts like Keystone or Copper Mountain without driving.
  • Extended Service: Runs early in the morning and late into the evening.
  • Great for Day Trips: Hop on a bus to Frisco for shopping or Silverthorne for the outlet mall.

Breckenridge Gondola

Travel from downtown Breckenridge to Peak 7 and Peak 8 without driving! This free scenic ride is a must-do whether you’re heading to the slopes or simply want to enjoy breathtaking mountain views.

Gondola Quick Facts:

  • Runs Seasonally: Open during winter and summer (closes in spring and fall for maintenance).
  • Connects Town to Ski Areas: Takes you directly from Breckenridge Station to ski lifts at Peaks 7 and 8.
  • Free for All Riders: No lift ticket is required to ride.

The gondola ride takes about 10 minutes and offers an unparalleled view of the mountains.

Is There An Airport Shuttle in Breckenridge?

Yes! Everyone knows asking for a ride to the airport can be a drag; plus, if you’re here on vacation and don’t have friends in the area, you’re pretty strapped for options. Taxis and ride-share apps get expensive when they start to add up, as well, especially if you’re traveling long distances. Luckily, you can use the Peak 1 Express or Summit Express shuttle services to get a ride into the Denver and Vail airports. Prices vary depending on what time of day you need the shuttle and how long the travel time is, but they’re incredibly reliable.

What If I Don’t Want to Use Public Transportation?

Of course, you don’t have to use public transportation. We highly recommend it, as it’s free and easy to use, but there are other ways to get around town!

We already mentioned where you can rent a car here, but another alternative is renting a bike! Breckenridge is a bike-friendly town with over 200+ miles of dedicated paths and several local rental options.

Renting a bike is a great way to explore the town and trails in warmer months. Main Street and many local areas are highly walkable, making it easy to enjoy the shops, restaurants, and scenic views without a vehicle.

Are There Ubers/Lyfts in Breckenridge?

There are! If you need to go somewhere that’s not on any of our public transportation routes, you can always hop in an Uber or Lyft. As with any time you use these ride-share services, be cognizant of your surroundings. Make sure your driver is who they say they are and that their license plate matches the plate number on the app. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Our Top Tips When Using Public Transportation in Breckenridge:

Tips for Getting Around Breckenridge

To make the most of Breckenridge’s public transportation system, here are some key travel tips:

  1. Download the My Free Ride App: Get real-time bus tracking and schedules at your fingertips.
  2. Plan for Peak Times: During ski season and festivals, buses can get crowded. Travel early to avoid long waits and leave plenty of extra room for error.
  3. Use Park-and-Ride Lots: If you’re driving into town, park at Satellite Lot or Airport Road Lot and take the Free Ride into downtown.
  4. Dress for the Weather: Waiting for a bus in winter? Wear warm layers, especially if there’s snow in the forecast.
  5. Respect Local Rules: Public transportation is a shared resource, so be mindful of space and keep your belongings organized.

What is a Ski-In/Ski-Out Rental?

So, you’re researching the best places to stay in Breckenridge and have come across a variety of vacation rentals. It can be hard to choose the best vacation rental for you when there are so many options! Most amenities are easy enough to understand; mountain view rentals, for example, mean exactly that—they’re rentals with a mountain view. However, if you haven’t been to Breckenridge before, you might not be familiar with ski-in/ski-out rentals. So, what is a ski-in/ski-out rental, you ask?

Well, it’s just as simple, really! Our Breckenridge Ski-in/ski-out rentals are accommodations directly on the ski mountain. You can ski right onto the hill instead of driving there. Sounds pretty convenient, right? It is! There are many benefits to staying in a ski-in/ski-out rental. We’ll explore them now!

Why Should I Stay in A Ski-in/Ski-Out Rental?

The biggest reason to stay in a Breckenridge ski-in/ski-out rental is the convenience factor! Staying in one of these cozy mountainside units is the closest to the ski slopes you can get.

You’ll save time and stress while staying in a ski-in/ski-out rental. Just think—you don’t have to get everyone loaded into the car or circle around a parking lot trying to find a spot. You can start skiing at your own pace, and since you’re so close, you can be one of the first ones down the mountain! There’s nothing better than fresh, powdery tracks.

This is a great option if you’re traveling with kids, too. You’ll have easy access to your rental accommodation if anything urgent comes up! Plus, you can have your partner watch them while you sneak in a run or two.

Why Breckenridge is Perfect for a Ski-In/Ski-Out Rental

ski-in/ski-out rental

Breckenridge is the ideal skiing destination! If you’ve never been before, explore our ultimate guide to skiing in Breckenridge.

The ski season in Breckenridge lasts from November to May. That’s a lot of time you can spend out on the slopes! In fact, it’s actually one of the longest ski seasons in the United States.

Breckenridge is one of the top skiing destinations in the country. Enjoy the world-class slopes right here at Breckenridge Ski Resort, or if you’re in the mood to travel some, check out Keystone Ski Resort, Arapahoe Basin, or Copper Mountain.

How to Choose the Right Ski-In/Ski-Out Rental

Choosing a ski-in/ski-out rental in Breckenridge is similar to selecting any vacation rental! You have to keep several factors in mind when deciding where to stay. Are you looking for a rental big enough to fit the whole family, a large friend group, or a cozy condo for two?

Some of our ski-in/ski-out rentals can accommodate groups of up to eighteen people! If you’re heading out on a large group stay, you could stay in the magnificent new Snowy Owl Retreat, right next to the gondola! It offers unmatched ambiance, elegance, and mountainside charm.

Those looking for a smaller rental can opt for something like Grandview C12. Though it’s smaller, it’s just as convenient as our larger rental homes. You can ski down the 4 O’Clock Run and easily access the Snowflake lift when you stay here!

There are a few other factors to consider when choosing your ski-in/ski-out rental in Breckenridge, CO. Is there a specific mountain or trail that you want to be close to? Perhaps you have a favorite run and want the chance to be the first one out on the trail.  You’ll also want to be aware of the skill level required for the trail you’re staying next to—don’t stay near the most challenging trails if you’re a beginner! The good news is, you can tailor your experience specifically. We have a large variety of ski-in/ski-out rentals to choose from!
